Have you heard of Nichole and Evan Robertson of the littlebrownpen? They have the most wonderful idea! First, they have a blog written by Nichole who is a freelance copywriter. I know I’m supposed to be sharing with you what I’m thankful for today, so today I am really thankful I found these artists! Since all of my blogger friends have the same interests, I’m dying to share this with you! But most of my coworkers aren’t interested in the same things as I am, and sometimes I think my husband must get tired of hearing me babble on about this, that and the other. Feels great to be dreaming up and illustrating my own ideas again, outside of an assignment or a homework deadline.Įver have those moments when you discover something or someone, like an artist, and you want to share this new discovery with everyone you know? That happens to me all the time. I have at least three more pages in progress, and lots of ideas to fill up many more pages. I have missed experimenting in my sketchbook, so I’m happy to have the time and energy and inspiration again. I really love working like this, starting out with a pencil sketch using a Verithin pencil, adding some color with acrylic or watercolor paints, and finishing off with some dimension by adding pen and colored pencil. I’ve also been working on quite a few flower sketches lately too. So I ended up doing another page, similar in style to cover up with my calendar pieces. When I was finished, I liked the page so much, I decided I couldn’t cover it up. My vision for June was berries since they are usually in season this month, so I sketched and painted a page with strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries in mind. I had some catching up to do with a calendar for May, That’s it – done! You have an easy DIY advent calendar that looks so great.I haven’t posted anything new from my sketchbook in quite awhile. The truth is I haven’t spent a lot of time experimenting in my sketchbook until just recently. Fill each pot with your little treat and place the tree on top. Spray them gold – best to put them in a disposable cardboard box or similar otherwise they fly around when you spray as they’re so light.įinally take your number stickers (if using) and stick them on. They make the perfect little pots to balance the trees on and of course to put your little gifts in. I had them at home as I’ve used them in the past for Anya’s birthday parties to serve ketchup. They’re called soufflé cups and cost very little for loads of them. Next take your mini paper cups – these are the little paper cups that you fill with ketchup and mayo. I blu-tacked each fold of all the trees as I found that they flared out too much otherwise, and didn’t stand up quite as well as I wanted them to. Follow the tutorial exactly but I added one more step. I didn’t even need to look at the instructions after the 5th or 6th tree. It was a bit tricky at first but after the 2nd or 3rd tree it was really easy so stick with it. I followed an origami tree tutorial that I found online. Mini number stickers (or you could hand write the numbers on) Mini paper cups – they’re called souffle or sauce cups Origami paper – you can choose any colour but I went for two shades of green But of course I needed to find a place for the gifts and what better place than under the trees? So I thought why not make a forest of mini Christmas trees and that’s exactly what happened. I was drawn to origami as I chanced across some lovely matt origami paper in a deep green. This year I’ve made my diy advent calendar a bit earlier as I wanted to share it with you sooner and I hope you like it. Of course I was going to make her another one, just not in June! I think the advent calendar may have been her favourite part of Christmas which is just as much about the build-up as it is about the day. She loved opening those boxes so much and since about June of this year she has been regularly asking when she could have another advent calendar. Last year the advent calendar I made for Anya was a huge hit.
